Confessions of a Peace Lover…by Beth Beechy

13 Dec

It’s happened again…another up close and personal sighting of someone using their unique giftedness to bless God’s people and bring glory and honor to Him in the process. This time it was a sweet young mom named Bobbi who opens up her home each month for other moms to gather and hear several “seasoned” (cough cough…older) moms speak on a topic that is relevant to the young mama’s lives. Bobbi is giving young moms a place to belong!

I had the privilege of being a part of this sweet group when I (a “seasoned” mom) was asked to speak on the topic of finances and ways to save money. I hope they will let me listen in next month when the subject is fitness and nutrition!

The topics are all wonderful yet it still takes someone allowing God to use them to bring a gathering like this together. Whether it’s opening up your home or finding a public gathering place, meetings like these cannot happen unless someone takes the initiative to step out of their comfort zone and take part in the adventure that God is calling them to do.

The call is unique to each one of us because God calls us according to the gifts and abilities He places in each us. That’s why Bobbi is giving young moms a place to belong; that’s why Barb is giving gals with who delight in decorating and design a place to belong. It’s why Tanya opens up her home for coffee and conversation and Lisa invites people to help her write songs. It is why Jocelyn writes and teaches Bible studies and Tonya invites women into her home to participate in a Beth Moore study. It’s why prayer groups are formed and mission trips happen. And in the midst of people stepping out in faith to participate in the work that God has called them to do something beautiful happens: relationships are made between people who never would have known each other had they not been given a chance to be a part of bigger group and find a place to belong.

God loves it when His kids are in relationship with one another, using their unique giftedness to compliment and work with one another. Harmony doesn’t just happen in music, it happens whenever we can work together to create something beautiful for the glory of God. Finding a place to belong, when surrendered to God’s will for your life, is yet another way to worship our King!

I am convinced that when we give each other a place to belong we make God smile. If you’re a parent you know just how He feels, it’s that feeling you get when you see your child invite another child to come play with them.

God is the author of “a place to belong”. It’s what He did for each one of us when He stepped out of His “comfort zone” (yes, I’d say Heaven is the ultimate comfort zone!) choosing to come to earth as the babe in the manger, fully human yet fully God, to live life for the sole purpose of dying on the cross to redeem mankind.

John 3:16 tells us “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

As Christmas 2011 draws near I want to stay focused on the real reason for the season, focusing on the One who loved us so much He made sure we have a place to belong for all of eternity.

As I make or purchase gifts for those I love I want to stay focused on the gift God made and purchased for those He loves.

As I look for ways to use the gifts He has given me I want to stay focused on the plan and purpose He has for my life. I want to stay focused on using the gifts He has so graciously given to me to give others a place to belong. A place to get to know Him better; and a place to come together in harmony and use our gifts in worship for the One “Who so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son”.

My gifts cost me my time, talent, and treasure, His gift cost Him His life.

His life, His death, His resurrection, the perfect combination for the gift of salvation He offers to all.

He offers a place to belong; our part is to choose to belong to Him to surrender our old life for a new life in Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:17-18 says “anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! And all of this is a gift from God”

Step out of your comfort zone and into God’s adventure; a new life lived for Him!

Now that is the perfect place to belong!

Until next time…

Beth
